The 1099-NEC deadline is not January 31 in 2027. January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so it is Monday, February 1. Two more dates move for the same reason, and one of them is a federal holiday most calendars forget. Here is the whole season with the shifts applied, and the arithmetic shown so you can check it.

Why the 2027 dates move
The rule is in the general instructions for information returns: if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, filing or furnishing on the next business day is timely. Three statutory dates land badly in 2027.
February 15, 2027 is the third Monday of February, which is Presidents Day. That pushes the later recipient deadline to Tuesday the 16th rather than the 15th, and it is the shift most likely to be missed, because a date that is already a Monday does not look like it needs moving.
The 2027 season, in order
- Mon Feb 1, 2027
- 1099-NEC to recipients AND to the IRS. Also the recipient deadline for most other 1099s, and for W-2.
- Tue Feb 16, 2027
- Recipient deadline for the forms that get the later date, including 1099-B, 1099-S, consolidated reporting statements, and 1099-MISC when only boxes 8 or 10 are filled.
- Mon Mar 1, 2027
- Paper filing with the IRS for everything except 1099-NEC. Mostly academic, since 10 or more returns must be filed electronically.
- Wed Mar 31, 2027
- Electronic filing with the IRS for everything except 1099-NEC. This is the real deadline for most filers.
Confirm against the IRS tax calendar and Publication 509 once the tax-year 2026 versions publish. The shifts above follow directly from the statutory dates and the next-business-day rule, but the IRS calendar is the authority, and per-form instructions can carry their own exceptions.
1099-NEC is the one to plan around
- 01
1099-NEC has no extra filing time
Every other form gives you until March 31 to file electronically. 1099-NEC does not. The recipient copy and the IRS copy are both due on the same day, and that day is the earliest deadline of the season.
- 02
The 30-day automatic extension does not apply to it
Form 8809 buys an automatic 30 days for most information returns. For 1099-NEC and for W-2, there is no automatic extension. You may request one, and it is granted only for specific hardship reasons, and only if you ask before the due date.
- 03
It is the form most firms file most of
Contractor payments are the bulk of a typical practice's 1099 volume, which means the tightest deadline governs the largest pile. Plan the season around February 1, not March 31.
What late costs
Per return, and it stacks. A firm that misses 200 forms by a month is not looking at a fee, it is looking at a five-figure problem.
- Within 30 days
- $60 per return
- 31 days to August 1
- $130 per return
- After August 1
- $340 per return
- Intentional disregard
- $690 per return, or more, no cap
These amounts are adjusted for inflation each year, so treat them as the shape rather than the final figure and check Publication 1099 or the penalty section of the IRM for the current numbers. Small filers have lower annual caps, and a genuine reasonable-cause case can abate a penalty. Neither helps with a deadline you simply forgot.
Five ways firms lose this season
- 01
Writing January 31 on the plan
It is a Sunday in 2027. The date is February 1. This is small until a workflow, a client letter, or an internal reminder is built on the wrong day and someone treats February 1 as already late.
- 02
Assuming every 1099 shares one deadline
1099-NEC is due to the IRS two months before the others. Treating the season as one deadline either rushes everything or misses the only one that matters early.
- 03
Filing on paper without checking the threshold
Ten or more information returns in total must be filed electronically. That count aggregates across form types, so a firm with six 1099-NECs and five 1099-INTs is over the line.
- 04
Leaving the TCC to December
Approval can take up to 45 business days, which is about nine weeks. An application started in November has no margin before February 1, and there is no queue to appeal to.
- 05
Treating a transmitted file as a filed return
An IRIS transmission gets a receipt, then an acknowledgement. Those are different things. A transmission rejected for schema errors cannot be replaced through the normal process; it has to be refiled as a new Original, with a new filing date.
What makes 2027 different from every prior year
The dates are close to normal. The system is not. FIRE retires on December 31, 2026, so the returns you file in early 2027 are the first that must go through IRIS. If your filing route is not settled before the holidays, February 1 arrives with a format change, a possible credential application, and your largest pile of forms all at once.
Pick the route now. The FIRE-to-IRIS transition guide compares the three, the TCC walkthrough covers the one with a nine-week queue, and the Portal limits guide explains where the free option stops working. An extension request lives on Form 8809, and it is not available automatically for the form you file most of.
Before any of that, check the file you already produce. Our free FIRE file validator reads a Publication 1220 file in your browser and reports errors by row. Finding a bad TIN in August costs nothing. Finding it on February 1 costs $60 a return and rising.
Questions
- What is the 1099-NEC deadline for 2027?
- Monday, February 1, 2027, for both the recipient copy and the IRS copy. The statutory date is January 31, but January 31, 2027 falls on a Sunday, and the IRS rule moves a due date that lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday to the next business day.
- Why is the deadline February 1 and not January 31 in 2027?
- Because January 31, 2027 is a Sunday. The general instructions for information returns state that if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, filing or furnishing on the next business day is timely.
- When are 1099s due to the IRS if I file electronically?
- March 31, 2027 for most forms, which is a Wednesday and does not shift. The exception is 1099-NEC, which is due to the IRS on the same day as the recipient copy, February 1, 2027.
- Which 1099 forms get the later recipient deadline?
- 1099-B, 1099-S, consolidated reporting statements, and 1099-MISC when only boxes 8 or 10 are completed. The statutory date is February 15, which in 2027 is Presidents Day, so it moves to Tuesday, February 16.
- Do I have to file 1099s electronically?
- If you file 10 or more information returns in total for the year, yes. The count aggregates across form types rather than applying per form, so a mixed set of returns can cross the threshold even when no single type does.
- Can I get an extension on 1099 deadlines?
- Form 8809 gives an automatic 30-day extension for most information returns. There is no automatic extension for 1099-NEC or W-2; those require a request made before the due date for specific reasons, and it may be denied. An extension to file never extends the deadline to furnish recipient copies.
- What are the penalties for filing 1099s late in 2027?
- The tiers are roughly $60 per return if corrected within 30 days, $130 if corrected after that but before August 1, and $340 if later, with a higher penalty and no cap for intentional disregard. The amounts are inflation-adjusted each year, so confirm the current figures against the IRS before relying on them.
- Does FIRE still work for the 2027 season?
- No. FIRE retires on December 31, 2026. Tax-year 2026 returns filed in early 2027 must go through IRIS, either the free Portal, your own A2A integration, or a transmitter filing on your behalf.
