Steps

  1. 1. Download the A2A XML

This is the IRIS A2A transmission, built to Publication 5718. IRISfile can send it to the IRS for you with File with the IRS. Download it to keep a copy or to send it with your own A2A software.

A large batch may come as several parts, one button per part.

The Download A2A XML button is outlined above the record table.

  2. 2. Download the Portal CSV

Use this file to upload returns in the IRS Taxpayer Portal yourself. It covers 1099-NEC, MISC, and INT.

Upload the file as you downloaded it. If you open it in Excel and save it, Excel strips ZIP leading zeros and can add blank rows, and the Portal rejects both.

  3. 3. Print recipient copies

The Print 1099 (PDF) button is outlined.

  4. 4. Download again later from IRS Files

Each file's row in IRS Files keeps its downloads, so you can come back for them at any time. After you print and send recipient copies, click MARK PRINTED to keep track.

One row in IRS Files with the File with the IRS, Download, and Print 1099 actions, and MARK PRINTED under Print 1099.
Every download stays on the file's row in IRS Files.

Questions

Should I use the A2A XML or the Portal CSV?
Use File with the IRS or the A2A XML for most clients. One A2A transmission can be up to 100 MB. The Portal CSV suits a small filing you want to send through the IRS Taxpayer Portal yourself, which takes up to 100 returns per submission.
Why is there no Portal CSV button for my 1099-DIV file?
IRISfile builds Portal CSVs for 1099-NEC, MISC, and INT only. File a 1099-DIV with the A2A XML.
Why is there no Print 1099 button?
Recipient copies cover 1099-NEC and MISC on the Pro plan and above. Other forms and plans show no Print 1099 button.
