# Business Central on-premises and IRIS

Your system exports a FIRE file. Here is how to get that file into IRIS.

[All guides](https://irisfile.co/guides)Last reviewed October 2026

Business Central on-premises has no built-in IRIS A2A filing. Microsoft's [1099 reporting documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/LocalFunctionality/UnitedStates/how-to-1099-report) (updated May 6, 2026) says magnetic media is “the only available option for on-premises users because the Microsoft security certificate for A2A communication can only be used in the cloud.” The last FIRE filing day is Thursday, November 19, 2026, 3 p.m. ET. Tax year 2026 returns, filed in 2027, must go through IRIS.

Key facts

**Who is stuck**: Business Central on-premises users

**Why**: The Microsoft A2A certificate works only in the cloud

**What Business Central exports**: A FIRE (Publication 1220) magnetic media file

**Last FIRE filing**: Thursday, November 19, 2026, 3 p.m. ET

**Forms Business Central supports**: 1099-MISC, NEC, INT, DIV

**IRISfile from that file**: Converts all four; files originals when A2A filing opens for the 2027 season

## What Microsoft says

Business Central offers two submission paths. The cloud product has an API that integrates with the IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS). Each user connects an IRIS User ID through the IRS Consent App, then creates and sends transmissions from the IRIS Transmissions page.

The magnetic media path uses the IRS 1099 FIRE request page. Microsoft calls it optional for cloud users. For on-premises users it is the only path, because the A2A certificate is cloud-only.

The IRS closed new FIRE TCC applications on July 21, 2026, and FIRE retires on December 31, 2026. See the IRS page on [filing information returns electronically](https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/filing-information-returns-electronically-fire) for the dates. For tax year 2026, the only built-in export of an on-premises tenant goes to a system that no longer accepts filings.

## Your three options

1. ### File through the IRIS Taxpayer Portal

Free, and it needs your own IRIS TCC. You key returns by hand or upload the IRS CSV template. The cap is 100 returns per submission, and one CSV holds up to 250 records. Microsoft documents no Portal CSV export for Business Central, so plan to map the columns yourself.

2. ### Get your own TCC and build the A2A chain

You apply for an IRIS TCC, get an X.509 certificate, an IRS API Client ID and consent, and pass the A2A testing. Microsoft documents no A2A route for on-premises Business Central, so this means building your own integration outside the product.

3. ### Use a transmitter that already holds the chain

A transmitter files under its own TCC. You hand it the FIRE file Business Central already produces. IRISfile is built this way.

Limits of the free route are in our [IRIS Taxpayer Portal guide](https://irisfile.co/guides/iris-taxpayer-portal-limits). The TCC wait is up to 45 calendar days, per the [IRS TCC page](https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/iris-application-for-tcc) and [Publication 5717](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p5717.pdf). Our [TCC application guide](https://irisfile.co/guides/iris-tcc-application) walks through it.

## Take the Business Central FIRE file to IRIS

Business Central's magnetic media export is a FIRE file. FIRE accepts only the Publication 1220 format, 750 characters per record, and that is the format IRISfile reads. The [Publication 5718 guide](https://irisfile.co/guides/publication-1220-vs-5718) shows how those records map to IRIS XML.

1. ### Export the FIRE file from Business Central

Open IRS 1099 FIRE, set the Calendar Year, fill in the Transmitter Control Code field, and choose OK. Use Test File to print a test file first. Microsoft documents these steps in the Submit using magnetic media section.

2. ### Upload the file to IRISfile

IRISfile accepts .fire and .txt files, several per drop, up to 50 MB each. A file with more than one payer EIN splits into one file per payer.

3. ### Fix what the validator flags

Converting and validating are free. One failing record withholds all output for its file, so fix it in Business Central and export again, or check the file first with the free FIRE file validator.

4. ### File through IRIS

When A2A filing opens for the 2027 season, IRISfile transmits the IRIS XML under PixelCove's TCC, so you do not apply for one. Each transmission then shows its IRS receipt ID and acknowledgement.

## Which Business Central forms IRISfile files

Microsoft's [introduction to the IRS 1099 forms](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/localfunctionality/unitedstates/introduction-to-the-irs-forms) lists the form types Business Central supports. This table maps each to IRISfile today.

**1099-NEC**: Business Central supports it. IRISfile converts it and files originals when A2A filing opens for the 2027 season. It also writes an IRIS Portal CSV you upload yourself.

**1099-MISC**: Business Central supports it. IRISfile converts it and files originals when A2A filing opens for the 2027 season. It also writes an IRIS Portal CSV you upload yourself.

**1099-INT**: Business Central supports it. IRISfile converts it and files originals when A2A filing opens for the 2027 season. It also writes an IRIS Portal CSV you upload yourself.

**1099-DIV**: Business Central supports it. IRISfile converts it and files originals when A2A filing opens for the 2027 season. It has no Portal CSV output.

**Corrections and voids**: Held out unless the record is marked corrected and links to one accepted filing. IRISfile lists the reason for each held-out record.

Records IRISfile cannot file are listed in the results with a reason. They are never dropped silently.

## What to decide first

**You file for few payers**: Get your own TCC now and use the Portal. Start the application early: it can take up to 45 calendar days.

**You file for many payers, or cannot wait for a TCC**: Upload the FIRE file to a transmitter. Upload, convert and validate are free in IRISfile, a license for the tax year covers the outputs, and filing is charged per form. See pricing.

**You plan to move to the cloud product**: Microsoft's IRIS integration covers cloud users. Until you move, the FIRE file is how an on-premises tenant gets data out.

## Questions

**Why can't Business Central on-premises file through IRIS directly?**: Microsoft's documentation says FIRE is the only available option for on-premises users because the Microsoft security certificate for A2A communication can only be used in the cloud. The IRIS integration exists in the cloud product only.

**Can I keep using the FIRE export for tax year 2026?**: Not to file. The last FIRE filing day is Thursday, November 19, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET, and FIRE retires on December 31, 2026. Returns for tax year 2026 go through IRIS. You can still produce the FIRE file from Business Central and convert it.

**Which 1099 forms does Business Central support?**: Microsoft lists 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, 1099-INT and 1099-DIV. IRISfile converts all four from a FIRE file and files them as originals once A2A filing opens for the 2027 season, provided the export carries them. Microsoft does not say which forms the FIRE export includes.

**Do I still need a FIRE TCC?**: The Business Central request page asks for a Transmitter Control Code. Oracle's PeopleSoft guidance notes that a FIRE TCC cannot be used with IRIS, and the IRS closed new FIRE TCC applications on July 21, 2026. IRISfile transmits under its own IRIS TCC, so you do not apply for one.

**Does IRISfile print the recipient copies?**: Yes, for 1099-NEC, MISC and INT. One Print 1099 button prints the statements in a mailer layout for window envelopes, and the full-page Copy B covers any form the mailer leaves out. Business Central also prints or emails copy substitutes to vendors.

**Can I use the free IRIS Portal instead?**: Yes, if you have your own IRIS TCC. Microsoft documents no Portal CSV export for Business Central, so you key the returns or build the CSV from the IRS template.

**Does the cloud version of Business Central have this problem?**: No. Microsoft documents an API integration with IRIS for cloud users, with a per-user IRIS User ID set up through the IRS Consent App.
